Hi Ladies! A lot of you already know me, but for those who don’t, my name is Alex and I’m from Cardiff in ‘sunny’ South Wales. I am mum to two beautiful (but headstrong) girls, Lily, four, and Maisie, one, and wife to the ever-patient Darren. Our days are a balance of fun, housework and getting work done. It’s tough, but totally worth it. My father-in-law actually commented the other day how less stressed I am compared to when I was working. Clearly something is going right!
Happy Elephant Creative has been on the cards for a long time but it was only after I had Maisie that I had the self-belief and determination to go it alone. It was no longer viable for me to have a regular job with two children. I wanted to be there for them, taking them to school, feeding them, tucking them in at night, and a job didn’t allow that (as we all know).
After completing an ILM course early in my maternity leave, I heard about this amazing community called BizMums where women had each other’s backs. I took a deep breath and joined. And I haven’t looked back since. Once BizMums became a part of my life, I had the courage to set up Happy Elephant Creative. I’ve met some amazing people along the way and I didn’t return to work, something that I wasn’t sure would actually happen.
Happy Elephant Creative was inspired by my family. I wanted to create a life and an income that would make us all happy, and as a qualified graphic designer, it seemed like the obvious route to take. When thinking of a name, I wanted something that would be ‘me’ without being my name. I have always loved elephants and so it made sense to use them in the name, and I added the Creative part as I wanted the flexibility in case I ever wanted to branch out from design.
I had lost my passion for design while working, but I soon found it again after working for myself with some amazing clients. Through BizMums, I have developed the niche of working with other mums in business. I love being able to help them develop beautiful graphics to represent themselves while giving their businesses a professional feel. I offer affordable solutions and I am there every step of the way to make sure they are 100% happy with what we produce.
My biggest challenge right now is probably time. As a mum of two, I don’t have a lot of time in the day to get work done, but I am learning to get small tasks done and to leave the bigger, more in-depth work for the evenings when the girls are asleep. It means I spend a lot less time with Darren, but he is so understanding and knows it will be worth it for the end goal. And it won’t be forever; before we know it they’ll both be in full time school and we will be wondering where our babies went!
Within the next few years, I want Happy Elephant to become recognised as a quality graphic design brand. I want to create unique, bespoke designs that encompass the visions of the companies I work with. I want my name to be known within the industry and for people to look to me for inspiration and advice. That would have been really hard for me to admit not that long ago, but that’s the power of BizMums.
Without BizMums, I’m not sure any of this would have been possible. Not because I’m not capable, but because I didn’t believe I was capable. The one thing I have learnt is that it’s all about mindset. You can be who you want to be and do what you want to do; you just need a plan and belief. I love BizMums so much I recently became a host. Now I get to share the power of BizMums and give something back. I cannot stress enough the difference it has made to my life and I can guarantee I will be a life-long member and advocate.
