My name is Emma Corkish and I’m the owner of October Creative, a graphic design and marketing agency. As well as running my own business I’m a wife and mum to two small boys, Jacob and Samuel and we live in Northwich in Cheshire. We’re a busy bunch and work fits around the boys school and nursery runs, so I’m often still at my desk long into the night, catching up on emails and adding the finishing touches to my designs. If I ever find myself with any free time then I enjoy gardening, going to see live bands and eating out.
I offer graphic design and marketing solutions to small and medium sized businesses, so everything from logos and branding (i.e. leaflets, posters, business cards) right through to web design and copywriting for social media and blogs.
October Creative was set up whilst I was on maternity leave with my youngest son from my previous job in Property Marketing. I decided to retrain as a freelance graphic designer as it was time for a change and this career would give me the flexibility to work around the children. Something I couldn’t have done with my previous job. It was tough learning a new skill with a 3-month old baby to look after, but I took on work experience with people I knew in the industry and spent every spare minute playing with the design software. The business has just celebrated its first year birthday and continues to go from strength to strength.
I love the creative side of graphic design. For many years I was on the other side of the table, as the client commissioning work from designers, and I always found it frustrating that I couldn’t convey exactly how I wanted a campaign or an advert to look. Now I can put my ideas into practice! I also love talking to and meeting new people and helping them develop their marketing to get the most out of their own businesses.
My biggest challenge is finding new clients. As the business is so young, I have a very limited advertising budget. Social media is becoming more and more restrictive and ensuring that my website ranks highly enough to be seen on Google is an ongoing challenge. I try to offset this by networking as often as I can, as I find that people are more likely to do business with people they have met, than from an online advert.
I’d love the business to continue to grow, gain a good solid customer base and generate a healthy profit. It takes lots of hard work and I’m committed to learning more about design, as well as running a freelance business.
I found Bizmums whilst looking for local networking opportunities. To date I’ve only actually attended one meet up, but I’m booked in for next week’s meet up in South Liverpool (my old stomping ground!) and now hope to make this a regular event. I also really enjoy the webinars and find the topics and guest speakers very engaging and relevant to my own business.
