The Power of Habit

What is a Habit?

Habits are things we do on a regular basis, such as brushing our teeth before we go to bed, getting up and making a coffee first thing in the morning, the way we get dressed or put on our make up. We have many habits that we don’t even realise that we are doing!

How do habits form?

When you routinely perform the same actions, your brain learns this pattern of behavior and sets up a pathway. This pathway is a more efficient way for the brain to process the routine, as opposed to a new series of discreet tasks. That is a habit.

Think of tracks dug into the mud. It is much easier to drive your car with the ruts than trying to drive through, over or against them.

Why are habits so powerful?

Our habits define our character, our thoughts and feelings and our ‘usual’ behaviours. These behaviours become sub concious so we don’t even realise that we’re doing them. For unhealthy distructive habits these can be our down fall which is why it is so importnat to be mindful of these and to adopt new healthy helpful habits in their place.

How do we create new habits?

Setting up these pathways is actually quite simple. With daily repetition, you can institute a new habit in as little as 10 days. That is, of course, if the new habit is not competing against an old one. Unfortunately, once a pathway is set it is extremely difficult to get rid of, which is why breaking a bad habit is so hard.

Habit formation is the process by which new behaviors become automatic. If you instinctively get up and make a coffee first thing in the morning you have a habit. By the same token, if you take a bottle of water to bed with you every night and drink that before you get out of bed in the morning then that is a habit too. Old habits are hard to break and new habits are hard to form but through repetition, it is possible to form new habits.

The new habit challenge!

Because it is so easy to start new habits that can make us feel better why don’t we? There could be lots of reasons but one of the main reasons is that just as it is easy to work on forming new habits it is just as easy not to! Some of the most powerful habits you can form are the most simplest to do but are often the most hardest. So in true BizMums style by working together we can all create some new habits that will be working for us not against us. Every 20 days on the BizMums page we will start to create a new habit and by being accountable to each other, sharing tips and brainstorming ideas we can support each other to success! Everyone is different so there are no hard and fast rules or formulas for success but by trying new things you can find out what works for you!

Some of the habits that we will be creating may be totally new to you, others may involve you having to overwrite existing bad habits that are deeply engrained, these are the hardest to do but with consistent effort, openness to try new things and the support of others you should be able to make good progress.
The first habit that we will be creating is the water habit. Drinking 2 ltrs of water a day, easy to do? Or easy not to do! But the difference it could make to your well being in 20 days should be well worth the effort. It may mean making some switches and having to break some of those bad habits, switching your cup of coffee first thing in a morning to a fruit tea or hot water and lemon and this will take some contious effort but throughout the 20 days we will be sharing ideas, and evidence why this is a good thing to help you on your journey.

Like with anything that we do the stronger our reason WHY we’re doing it the more chance of success we will have so for the first 5 days we will be sharing tips on the benefits to be had by drinking more water just to keep you focused and then for 5 days we will share some tips on ways to drink more water as by then you may be struggling a little and find some inspiration helpful. 10 days in you should be starting to feel the be benefits
of the changes you are making but some gentle reminders of why these changes will be good in the long run which will help to keep you going and then finally we will share some more tips to help you get through the final 5 days. After 20 days you will notice how much better you feel and it will feel more natural for you to be drinking more water using the habits you have than not too and the subconsciousness will kick in 🙂
